This is a typical floor plan design. This design is three zones(you could design it with more zones or different configurations if desired). Gives the option to cool  and heat different areas at the same time. You  can't do that with a single standard system design. A premium ducted zone system uses one big furnance or heat pump with a lot of dampers to control zoneing. If you wanted to heat only one area you are still paying for the power of a large furnace or heat pump and you can't heat and cool at the same time. On the other hand if it breaks down you are completely without heating or cooling. With a multi unit design only the area that the unit supplies would be affected not the whole house. Reduceing the need and expense for emergancy service calls.
